Bible Commentary for John 3:3

Wesley'due south Notes for John 3:iii

iii:3 Jesus answered - That knowledge will not avail thee unless grand be built-in over again - Otherwise thousand canst not see, that is, experience and enjoy, either the inward or the glorious kingdom of God. In this solemn discourse our Lord shows, that no external profession, no formalism ordinances or privileges of nascency, could entitle any to the blessings of the Messiah'south kingdom: that an entire alter of middle as well as of life was necessary for that purpose: that this could only be wrought in man by the almighty power of God: that every man born into the world was past nature in a state of sin, condemnation, and misery: that the free mercy of God had given his Son to evangelize them from information technology, and to raise them to a blessed immortality: that all flesh, Gentiles also as Jews, might share in these benefits, procured past his existence lifted up on the cross, and to exist received by faith in him: only that if they rejected him, their eternal, aggravated condemnation, would be the sure consequence. Except a man be born again - If our Lord by being built-in again means only reformation of life, instead of making any new discovery, he has only thrown a great bargain of obscurity on what was before plain and obvious.

People'due south Bible Notes for John 3:3

Joh 3:3 Verily, verily, I say unto thee. This form of expression was often upon the lips of Jesus to give accent to an unusually solemn and weighty announcement. Information technology occurs twenty-v times in John. See PNT "Mt 5:18". Except a human be built-in again, etc. The Greek term "anothen", translated "again", is rendered "anew" in the Revised Version, which is amend. Information technology is the cracking doctrine, so fundamental in the Gospel, of Regeneration, a new birth, existence made a new animal, the same doctrine spoken of in Joh one:12,13. Nicodemus, similar all Jews, supposed that all who were built-in as children of Abraham would, as Abraham'south seed, exist citizens of the kingdom, but Jesus shows him that no one can be a new creature in Christ Jesus unless he is born anew. Nosotros are built-in naturally into the kingdom of nature, to live the natural life; if we enter the kingdom of heaven, the kingdom of grace, it must be by a new nativity. The doctrine that a man tin bury his old sinful life, and brainstorm a new ane with the freshness of youthful promise, is foreshadowed in the Old Testament (Isa ane:18 Jer 31:33 Eze 11:19 36:26), and taught in the New Testament (Ro half-dozen:viii 8:3 12:2 2Co five:17 Ga 6:15,16).
